Well, I think that it happened! It seems like all the evidence that we have so far about it (like that we can see our universe is expanding, and find traces of energy from the event) supports the idea of a big bang. However there are certainly people who have different ideas and it is a very complicated topic. The people who work on those kinds of things (cosmologists) mostly do lots of extremely difficult maths to try and figure out the answers.

I remember when I was in school I wanted to know more about it and I found a really great book by a guy called Jim Al-Khalili who is really good at explaining physics and cosmology so maybe you could find out more. There are lots of other people who do that to, like Simon Singh he’s really good.

Sometimes I talk about this with my husband – he studied astrophysics at university, so he knows more about it than I do. But to be honest, I just can’t really understand it very well! I was never very good at physics and when I think about all these massive things like the infinite size of space, or what came before (or will come after) our universe, then it just confuses me!
