My first field trip to Kenya was actually my first field trip ever, and my first time in Africa – I was about 22 and doing a short research project as part of my masters degree. I went with about 6 other people, so it was quite a big group.

I was really nervous before I went – i thought it would be very difficult and I had no idea what to expect. You hear so much bad news about Africa – droughts, famines and all that, that I didn’t know how it would be when I got there. But when I arrived, I loved it – everyone was so friendly and happy, people were very welcoming and we had whole schools full of children shouting out “how are you” when we arrived in a village!

I did end up with sun stroke though, which was not very nice at all…so now I always make sure to drink LOADS of water all the time, to make sure I don’t get dehydrated! I enjoyed my first trip so much, that I knew I wanted to do something for my job that would let me go back again!
