HI, in cytology we have 2 areas of work – gynae and non gynae. Gynae is short for gynaecology, which is everything to do with the female genital tract or reproductive system this includes, vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes etc etc. And in cytology we deal with cells in fluids.

So we break our ‘cells in fluids’ work into 2 areas –

non gynae prep is everything that is not female genital tract related – so this is lungs, stomach, spinal fluid, urines, breast, salivary glands etc.

And when we work on ‘non gynae prep’, that means we are going to deal with and prepare all of the fluids we receive so that they can be looked at under the microscope.

So in a nut shell non gynae prep is preparing all of the fluids that are not from the female gential tract.
