I do lots of things, I like to play sport, at the moment I play rugby and go running but before I also played netball and hockey. I also am the broadcast editor for the science magazine at my university so I make lots of podcasts.

I really like watching films or going to the pub with my friends, and at the weekends if I get the chance and its windy enough I go kiting, I have a proper power kite so that’s really fun.

I like to do lots of different things – i really like nature and the outdoors, so i like walking in the countryside, hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing and gardening. When it’s rainy and miserable I like to spend all afternoon in the kitchen making things – cakes are my favourite things to make! I also like reading a good book, shopping, listening to music, going to watch a film and having a laugh with my friends! I have also recently start an art class…I am painting parasites 🙂

I am very interested in butterflies. Butterflies are a good indicator of the health of the environment. No butterflies means poor environment. So, I make sure my garden has the right plants for the caterpillars, for the larvae to eat while growing and nectar plants for the full grown butterfly. It is important to have all the necessary plants in the garden. You can see that it is not very helpful just to have a plant for the adult butterfly because there will never be a caterpillar and then necer a butterfly. Do you know that some ants look after butterfly larvae. You realise that a healthy environment is very complicated with plants insects interscting in a way we do not yet fully understand. Learning about the life of a butterly and all the plants that are necessary to keep them alive is a great way of becoming an environmental scientist and enjoy the great british countryside as well.

I do all sorts of stuff – I go out with my telescope and look at planets, galaxies, and the moon. I also really enjoy attaching my camera to the telescope and taking images of these objects.

I really love music so I go to a lot of concerts and shows.

I go to talk to school children about science, and I go to science events and help students with science things and their careers. And I wrote about that recently – http://www.ibms.org/go/nm/stem-ambassador-sandra-richards

I really enjoy reading aswell – I’m a big fan of Stephen King and I have been reading his books for about 20 years.

I have 2 children too – one is 2 and the other is 14, so I like having fun with them. My big one likes clothes shopping (ie that I pay for!) and we go to the cinema a lot or go out to eat somewhere nice.

And my little one likes looking at trains.
