I’ve never been a part of the government before, but I have collaborated with (worked with) people in the Ugandan and Kenyan Governments. When I am out there, I go and meet with them to talk about what is going on, what I am doing with my work, how I might be able to provide information from my research that would help them etc. Then when I have finished my research and I have some results, I will send it to them so that they can make use of it.

Also, sometimes if they need something specific (such as a map of a particular thing), they might email and ask me to make it for them. At first I was nervous meeting with them, but they are really friendly and helpful! I’ve not met any actual MPs yet though!

I worked in the Department of Health and was in charge of the Unit that examined the health effects of chemicals in food. These chemicals could be added during manufacture or they could get into food from the environment or they were already present in the food as part of their chemical makeup. The unit tried to advise Ministers on whether the food was safe or not safe. Much of this work is now done by the Department that now deals with the safety of all foods.

I haven’t had a job where I have a part in the government before (although I do get paid by the government to do my research!), but hopefully the things that I find out will be used by the government to decide on their policies for looking after the planet in the future.

A few years ago I did also have a job for the summer where I was helping to make satellites for the government that were for doing exploration and research on space and different planets. That was fun.
