In many ways yes. If you think about the topics that you learn about in physical geography – things like rivers and glaciers and how different factors shape the land – those are all things that you have to understand if you want to understand patterns that you see in really ancient rocks for you to know what kind of environment existed in the past. So I use that knowledge to figure out the environment of the rocks that I find fossils in, so that I know what sort of place the animals that the fossils are used to live in. The things I now work on are very specific, but geology generally, which is what I studied at university is a perfect combination of geography and all the different types of science. It’s all about using lots of different methods to figure out how our planet works, and there are loads and loads of really interesting jobs that you can do if you’re a geologist, not just my job! It’s a great subject.
